Fogged windows before a BC drive? Clear them before moving
A small clear patch is not enough for a practice drive. Prepare the windows, mirrors and ventilation before joining traffic in BC.
Updated:

British Columbia learners need a usable view ahead, beside and behind the vehicle. Clearing windows is part of preparation, not a task to finish while driving.
A clear patch is not a clear view
You get into a cold car after rain and the windows mist over. Wiping a small opening ahead may reveal the driveway, but it does not restore the side view needed to spot a pedestrian before reversing. Keep the vehicle parked while preparing the view. Check the windshield, side and rear windows and mirrors before moving.
Learn the controls while parked
Find the front defroster or demister, rear-window heater, wipers and washers using the vehicle manual. Use ventilation as directed and wait for an adequate view. Check that the wipers and washer fluid can keep the outside glass clear. If the view will not stay clear, change the practice plan rather than relying on your supervisor to see for you.
If visibility worsens on the trip
Keep attention on driving instead of searching unfamiliar menus. Reduce speed to suit visibility and increase space. If you cannot maintain a safe view, find a safe place away from traffic to stop and address the problem. For ICBC Class 7 practice, rehearse locating these controls while stationary and explain why a passenger's directions cannot replace your own observations.
Quick answers
Can I start once only the centre of the windshield clears?
Do not depart with the necessary side or rear view obscured. Wait until you can make the observations your manoeuvre requires.
Should I learn a borrowed car's demister while driving?
No. Locate and try the relevant controls while safely parked so an unfamiliar menu does not compete with road observation.
