Made a mistake during a BC practice drive? Reset your attention calmly
A calm routine for BC learners after a minor driving mistake: keep watching the road, avoid rushed corrections and discuss it once safely parked.

A practical attention-reset exercise for supervised Class 7 practice in British Columbia.
Give the present road your attention
After a minor mistake, keep observing traffic and controlling the vehicle. Do not let embarrassment turn into a sudden correction. ICBC encourages patience, fewer distractions and allowing time so you feel less rushed. The exercise below applies those ideas to supervised practice; it is not an official recovery procedure for a crash or emergency.
Scenario: you misunderstood the next turn
Your supervisor wanted a turn farther ahead, but you thought it was sooner. If you can safely continue on your current path, do so rather than make an abrupt manoeuvre to satisfy the instruction. Say briefly that you misunderstood, then return your attention to the road. Ask the supervisor for an alternative route when it is safe to discuss it. Save the detailed explanation for a stop.
Pause the lesson if your focus has not returned
If you remain too upset to observe and decide reliably, tell your supervisor. Find a safe, permitted place to park rather than stopping suddenly in traffic. Once parked, describe one specific cause: late directions, unfamiliar wording or trying to do too much. Agree on one change before resuming. In knowledge-test study, favour the response that preserves observation and a predictable path over rushing to repair a navigation error. This is a reasoning exercise, not an ICBC answer key.
Quick answers
Should we analyse the mistake while the car is moving?
Keep any essential communication brief. A long discussion can divide attention; save the detailed review for when the car is safely parked.
Does a small error mean the whole practice drive is wasted?
No. Once you are safely parked, identify one cause and one change for the next attempt. Continue only when you can pay attention reliably.
